Heartbreak Karaoke is back!

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Was it the son of a preacher man? A devil in a blue dress?

Or just that guitar picker your daddy told you not to marry

(You know they ain’t no good and your babies will probably grow up to be cowboys, too.)

You obviously don’t listen – but now everyone else will, dammit.

WORN FASHION JOURNAL proudly presents

the 3rd Annual VALENTINE’S DAY HEARTBREAK KARAOKE

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2010

don’t just feel the pain, spread it around.

We’ve got a microphone, sad, sad songs,

What else could you possibly need to mourn your latest romantic folly?

The hurtin’ happens at TERANGA, 159 Augusta Ave, Kensington Market

Doors open at 9 PM

Heartbreak at 9:01

Total emotional catharsis and hail a cab at 2 AM

$7 at the door, $5 if you’re wearing RED

Consider this your chance to dish it out instead of take it. You can thank us later.

After months of planning, prepping, and primping, the day of our Sol(e)d! auction/issue release/Shake a Tail dance party is finally upon us! The party starts at 7pm at the Bata Shoe Museum (327 Bloor Street West). We can tell you guys are as excited as we are: all presale tickets have been sold out! There will be a few available at the door, but come early so you can nab your spot and have a chance to bid on of twenty three original pairs of Keds, including the Samantha Purdy ones pictured above.
For just 28$ you get access to Bata Museum galleries all evening, cheap drinks, free food, great music and tail shaking all night long!
We will be selling 15$ tickets after 10:30, only available at the door and only if there is room available.
Support our vision of independent publishing! A portion of the proceeds from this event benefit Fashion Cares, in support of the AIDS Committee of Toronto.

Hope to see you there!

SOL[e]D Out

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Faithful WORN readers, you might have noticed lately our current obsession with shoes, ranging from the website’s Blahnikisms to our Tumblr logs of behind-the-scenes editorial work (covers, articles, etc.) and you know, the odd Doc Marten with hardcore hardware.

Have we gone retifist on you? For our upcoming themed summer issue, absolutely. The Shoe Issue is a first for us, and we’re very excited about the contents: explorations into sneaker freaker collectors, the cinematic fetishizations of a pilgrim buckle shoe, double-paged vegan leather bound spreads, and much much more.

In celebration of this monumental occasion, we’ve set aside the Heartbreak Karaoke Machine and Slow Dance cards for a curated Bata Shoe Museum exhibit! The ART & SOLE exhibition (May 21 - June 6) will feature twenty-four interpretations of that understated fash classic, Keds. We’ve been lucky enough to get those white canvas pairs into the hands of Renata Morales, Clayton Evans of complexgeometries, Angie Johnson of Norwegian Wood, and Damzels in This Dress; artists Allyson Mitchell, Hilly Yeung, Hollie Dzama, Marina Dempster and Team Macho. The exhibit will close with a v. fashionable gala (cocktails! hor d’oevres! 1960s Motown/Stax/Hi Records music courtesy of Shake a Tail DJs!) and live auction fundraiser which will give our readers the chance to bid on these wonderful creations, with a portion of proceeds supporting Fashion Cares (in support of ACT).

WORN is selling online NOW $28 advanced tickets (which includes a TWO YEAR WORN subscription — as you can tell from the CAPS overload, it doesn’t get any better than that!). We’ll also be selling tix at the following retail Winkel (1107 Queen Street East), Left Feet (88 Nassau Street), and Frou Frou (1616 Queen Street West).

Ok. So onto the next best thing — what are you going to be wearing for our fashionable event? Please tell in the comments.

The Drake salonnière women

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

In 17th century Paris, Hôtel de Rambouillet was the enlightened place to be. Catherine de Vivonne, a society figure/major French literary figure, would invite all the poor writers over to socialize, and over time, these writers would develop their artful letters via the enlightened conversations that were had in many of the small rooms that Mme de Ramboullet had set aside.

Salons were ruled by women: they determined the scope of the salon, broke down class and gender barriers and even got their own informal university education (which wasn’t exactly available to them at the time). And you can rest assure that the soft pleats of their court dress got a little rumpled with all that lounging.

So us WORN women are quite excited about the opportunity we have to reclaim the blue stockings tradition later today at Toronto’s Drake Hotel. We have to been asked to host a stylish salon, with our very own G. Stegelmann and recent Worn Crush/fashion illustrator gadabout Danielle Meder leading the charge. Do we have full skirts to wear? It’s cold, no. But we — the Wornettes, Editor-in-pants, assorted editrixes — will bring good conversation (although we hope you suggest topics in the comments below, please).
