Don’a-tell-a Donatella: How I Defied the Versace Brand by Wearing their Clothes while also Being a Regular Person

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Versace was always a little too much for me—too bright, too tight, too sex-bomb. But when a girl I know pulled this dress out of her filing cabinet (a fashion magic trick) and offered it to me, how could I refuse?

Let me introduce you to the newest Awesome Thing in my Closet: quintessential ’90s Versace in the form of a printed zip-front minidress. It’s made of weirdly thick fabric, and is quite warm, which I did not expect. It also rides up—but just enough to scandalize, never to humiliate. (From what I have seen of this brand, this may be part of the design.) The yellow-gold bauble that hangs off the zipper could, if I turned my head fast enough, give me a concussion.

It also looks awesome with combat boots and makes an excellent outfit for my part-time video store job.

Which is just as Gianni intended, I’m sure.

YouTube Gurus

Friday, December 9th, 2011

Sometime last year, my television went kaput, and my heart was left with a void that I slowly replaced with a YouTube obsession. The beauty gurus and their elaborate tutorials are a particular favourite.

To be honest, I pretty much repel colour. My wardrobe consists of strictly neutrals, as well as my make-up bag. I tend to live vicariously through the tutorials rather than try to mimic them, but it’s an art form to admire.

Dustin Hunter’s youtube channel is full of informative make-up tips and drastic yet wearable tutorials. His looks are always very bold and smokey. I find myself constantly on his channel searching for reviews of beauty products, trusting his opinions over store employees.

Heather is a Vancouver based student for special effects makeup. Although her YouTube channel tends to focus on makeup, she also does hair and nail tutorials. Her look is always changing, and her videos never bore.

Cora’s videos are fun and quirky, and she also happens to be hella funny. Her technique is flawless and her artistic capabilities are seemingly endless. Watch one of her Halloween tutorials, but only if you’re willing to risk having your mind blown.

Leesha’s enthusiasm will make you happy, just by watching her. Her makeup collection is massive, ranging from drugstore to designer products. Bonus: Her mother often makes appearances on her channel, with videos and tips of her own.

Nikkie is a 17 year old girl from the Netherlands. Her channel includes a lot of celebrity inspired looks, done in a wearable way. There is a video for every occasion imaginable—though I’ve yet to find the perfect “spending hours on end watching YouTube videos” look.

What I Wore to Worn: Peghah Channels the Night

Monday, December 5th, 2011

What inspired this outfit?
I don’t think any particular thing inspired it for me. I tend to be drawn to wearing darker things, and I always like clothes that have movement to them.

Tell me about one of the items you’re wearing?
I am wearing my favourite pair of shoes. I got these last fall and the more I wear them and rough them up, the more I like the way they look.

What’s the best book to read in this outfit?
Choke by Chuck Palahniuk, because when there is too much darkness, comedic relief is always necessary. That book is a perfect blend of the two.

What style icon would wear this outfit?
I’m not sure who would wear it, but I do know who I would like to put it on: Kate Lanphear.

shopping credits
Top from Aritzia, denim top from Acne, Jeans from Rag&Bone, shoes from Surface to Air.

Miriam Wornette

Saturday, December 3rd, 2011

I have recently graduated from OCAD with a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design. I am also greatly interested in photography. I joined the WORN design team was because it is a different sort of journal, one that I had never come across before. A lot of my inspiration comes from international sources: magazines, blogs, TV shows, etc. For my personal fashion inspiration, I enjoy looking through UK magazines or reading Swedish blogs. Or I look back at old photos of my parents and create styles through their ’70s and ’80s fashion.

My favourite artists are Goya and Aubrey Beardsley. I love re-watching Rambo and Rocky. My diet includes Reese’s chocolate and cream cheese bagels. I enjoy reading, boxing, and just recently took up tap dancing! Gene Kelly has been my inspiration since I was five years old, and I finally got a chance to try it.

Current Inspirations:

Mogollon
Typography, logos, editorial. So amazing you just want to sit at your computer and cry.

Faith
#1: It’s Canadian. #2: Who knew someone could make typography so exciting that you want to stare at it all day?

Pogo
One day I will move to Argentina and meet this amazing team of designers. Type and editorial, drooling in front of the screen sort of work.

Wolves & Bucks
Tony (Buck) and Adeline (Wolf) live in France, and document their daily lives and fashion.

Keiko Lynn
After looking through her blog of daily outfits, you just want to become best friends and go shopping together.
