“I try not to talk about it too much. I don’t want everyone to know about it.”
That’s what my friend said when she told me about Stella Luna.

Tucked away on Queen West West West, Stella Luna is one of Toronto’s best little vintage stores. Though only a tiny place, it’s neatly packed with all kinds of women’s vintage and retro clothes (sorry, no menswear) and accessories. Racks are filled and meticulously organized according to colour. Shelves along the top are arranged with hats and shoes, and there’s a nook in front with even more shoes and bags. The selection here ranges from vintage vintage - forties shoes and dresses - to more recent fashions. There are even the occasional designer pieces (I picked up a 70s jersey Lanvin dress a few years ago).

Everything at Stella Luna is in excellent condition (any minor damages are marked clearly on the tags) and prices are more than reasonable. Shoes average about $20 to $40. Shirts and skirts are usually less than $25. Dresses come in at about $25 or $35. Really nice designer pieces and fancier items are almost always around $60 - $80. Don’t forget the costume jewelry at the counter, starting at about $8.

This store is a goldmine if you’re a small size (2-8). Larger sizes are harder to come by in clothes as well as shoes, although there are always a few things available. The owner, Crispian, is very helpful and friendly. She has excellent knowledge of the stock available (both on the floor and in storage downstairs) so don’t hesitate to ask if you’re looking for something specific.

Stella Luna used to be a destination location, but not so anymore. As the very western end of Queen West gentrifies, there are lots of interesting little shops (mostly antiques and more vintage) popping up close by. The Polish neighbourhood on Roncesvalles (delis, bakeries, and loads of cafes and produce markets) is just around the corner so, even if it’s a bit of a trip, it’s worth it.

(If you’re looking for photoshoot rentals, you’re in luck. Expect to put down the total price up front as a damage deposit and pay a percentage of the garment upon its return.)
